Synopsis: A futuristic vision of Shanghai that presents a society in which memories can be erased and dangers can be predicted. William (Tim Robbins), sent to Shanghai to investigate fraud at the insurance company Sphinx, has a virus that allows him to read the minds of others. Maria (Samantha Morton), who works at Sphinx creating "papelles", indispensable documents so that people can do anything, is the person who is committing the fraud, selling false "paper" to people that Sphinx does not admit as insured.
