Synopsis: Late 20s. A shy and naive Grand Chess Master (John Turturro) travels to northern Italy to play the game of his life. The young Luzhin's talent had developed during a childhood marked by the stormy marriage of his parents; hence the obsession with chess as the only refuge, as a salvation table against the outside world. For his part, Natalia, despite family pressures to enter into relations with the potent Count of Stassard, is immediately attracted to Luzhin's erratic but portentous talent. She manages to open her eyes to the outside world, so different from a chess board. The problem is that Luzhin lacks defense mechanisms against real-world aggressions.
