Synopsis: In a small town on the coast of New Zealand, the aborigines of the Whangara tribe believe they come from a single ancestor, whose existence dates back a thousand years ago. His name is Paikea, and he escaped death after dumping his canoe, riding on the back of a whale. According to tradition, the head of the Whangara, the "Whale Rider", the Paikea, has to be a firstborn male. But Pai, an eleven-year-old girl, believes she is destined to be the highest authority of the tribe. Therefore, although he loves his grandfather Koro, he will face him and a thousand years of tradition.
